The acclaimed architectural virtuosos Herzog & de Meuron, laureates of the Pritzker Prize, have unveiled a tantalizing glimpse of their latest endeavor—a timber-structured sanctuary for the arts, poised to open its doors in December 2026. Currently known as the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, this venerable institution holds the distinction of being both the oldest and the largest art museum in Tennessee. Its impressive collection of over 10,000 works spans the annals of art history, from the enigmatic allure of ancient artifacts to the provocative expressions of contemporary creators. Commissioned in 2019, the relocation of this cultural gem to a new site in Downtown Memphis marks a profound metamorphosis, nestled along the bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River.

Herzog & de Meuron, in collaboration with archimania as architect of record and OLIN for landscape design, have envisioned a 123,500-square-foot campus that transcends the conventional boundaries of a museum. It is a bold invitation to the city, expanding gallery space by 50 percent while offering extensive, free public areas that beckon with open arms. The design ethos centers on accessibility and transparency, as the building's glass façade reveals its inner treasures to the street, inviting passersby to partake in the visual feast. Street-level galleries dissolve the barriers between interior and exterior, forging a harmonious dialogue with the urban milieu.

The museum's design extends its embrace to the cityscape with widened sidewalks that forge a vital link between Downtown Memphis and the riverfront. A public plaza, shared with the storied Cossitt Library, aspires to create a cultural commons, a vibrant nexus of intellectual and artistic exchange along the bluff. At the heart of this architectural marvel lies a shaded courtyard, a tranquil oasis for communal gatherings, while above, a verdant rooftop garden unfurls its splendor with sculptures, native flora, and an event pavilion offering sweeping vistas of the city and the river.

Within this sanctuary of creativity, visitors are invited to explore galleries, educational spaces, a café, and a museum store, primarily situated at street level. A mezzanine-level theater and direct access to the riverfront further enrich the visitor experience. The galleries, arranged in a continuous loop around the central courtyard, provide a fluid narrative for the museum's eclectic collection. With five galleries graced by expansive windows that frame views of the Mississippi River or the courtyard, the architectural design fosters a serene interplay between art and nature.

As construction progresses, the museum emerges as a pioneering structure in the United States, utilizing laminated timber as its primary material. The institution has shared a tantalizing preview of its curatorial vision for the new building, with collection highlights that include Old Master paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, late 19th and 20th-century American art, and a notable selection of photography. The collection continues to flourish, with plans for 18 distinct exhibitions that will weave connections across time, geography, and medium, facilitated by an architectural layout that encourages visual and conceptual dialogue.
