In the serene yet industrious landscape of Serra Gaúcha, the TKA Esplanade emerges as a testament to architectural harmony, where the industrial meets the natural in a seamless dance of form and function. This project, a creation of the Núcleo de Arquitetura Experimental, seeks to redefine the external spaces of a crane manufacturing plant, crafting an environment that is as functional as it is beautiful.
As one approaches the site, the eye is drawn to the interplay of basalt rock, concrete, and metal, each material chosen not only for its structural integrity but for the narrative it tells of the region’s geological and industrial heritage. The esplanade, flanking the administrative edifice, is an exemplar of spatial ingenuity. Here, access ramps and parking areas converge into a plaza that speaks the language of precision and elegance, its pathways a meticulous choreography of sawn basalt and bush-hammered floors.
The project unfolds with a natural grace from the elevated industrial pavilion down to the RS-122 road, the terrain’s undulations embraced rather than subdued. Levels are deftly articulated, with rocky slopes punctuating the vistas, creating moments of pause and reflection. This thoughtful terracing not only respects the natural topography but elevates it, transforming the landscape into a living tapestry of textures and tones.
At the heart of this design lies the main plaza, positioned with deliberate intent beside the company's glass-wrapped administration building. This elevation is not merely physical but symbolic, a stage set for the unfolding drama of human activity against the backdrop of nature’s grandeur. The sawn basalt pavement demarcates spaces of human congregation from vehicular routes, while the water mirror, a serene expanse, captures and reflects the sky, drawing the eye outward to the panoramic embrace of the region.
The narrative continues along the rammed earth walls, formed from local basalt stone, their organic lines tracing the contours of the land. These walls do more than define space; they frame the landscape, elevating the raw beauty of the materials and the terrain they inhabit. Resting areas interlace the levels, inviting moments of repose within the embrace of nature’s elements.
In the central plaza, sculptural 'Semente' tables, a creation imbued with regional tones and textures, stand as silent sentinels of design and craft. Nearby, a secluded plaza offers a counterpoint, sheltered beneath the generous canopy of a cherry tree, the air perfumed with its blossoms. Here, a low wall circles the plaza, its surface doubling as a bench, the 'Semente' tables providing continuity and familiarity.
The project’s meticulous attention to detail extends to its furniture, with Metalco benches seamlessly blending into the verdant palette, their wooden seats offering comfort and a tactile warmth. The black metal structure echoes the signage panels, ensuring a cohesive visual identity throughout the site.
Signage and pavement are more than functional necessities; they are integral to the design’s aesthetic coherence. Solid basalt directional totems and sheet metal identification plates speak a language of strength and subtlety, their forms illuminated by discreet ground lighting, transforming functional elements into features of understated elegance.
The TKA Esplanade is a masterclass in the art of contextual design, a project that not only acknowledges its environment but celebrates it, creating a space where industry and nature coalesce in a dialogue of mutual respect and admiration.
